NEW: GLP-1 therapy now also as a tablet

GLP-1 weight-loss pill: the therapy now also as a tablet

New: a GLP-1 therapy is now also approved as a tablet in the EU. Medical advice and an individual eligibility review are already possible. If the medical indication is appropriate, a prescription can be issued.

The prescription-only weight-loss tablet is taken once daily and may be an option for adults who prefer treatment without a weekly injection. It is approved for obesity from a BMI of 30, or from a BMI of 27 with at least one weight-related comorbidity. Whether a tablet, a weight-loss injection or another therapy suits you best is assessed individually by a doctor.

For some patients, losing weight without injections becomes a realistic option. Whether tablet or injection, treatment is always medically supervised – in person in Vienna 1020 or by video across Austria.

Important: the weight-loss tablet must be taken in the morning after at least eight hours without food, with a small amount of water. Afterwards, wait at least 30 minutes before any food, drink or other oral medicines.

Frequently asked questions about the GLP-1 weight-loss pill

Is the weight-loss tablet already available in Austria?

The weight-loss tablet is approved in the EU and has been available in Germany since September 2026. For Austria the launch has been announced; no specific market date has been published so far. Last updated: 9 September 2026.

What is the GLP-1 weight-loss pill?

The weight-loss tablet contains a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It supports the regulation of appetite and satiety and is used alongside nutrition, activity and medical supervision.

Who is the weight-loss tablet suitable for?

It is approved for adults with obesity from a BMI of 30, or overweight from a BMI of 27 with at least one weight-related comorbidity. Personal eligibility must be reviewed by a doctor.

How does it differ from the weight-loss injection?

The tablet is taken daily, the injection is given once weekly. The tablet requires precise fasting and intake rules. Which form is more suitable depends on your individual situation.

Is the weight-loss pill prescription-only?

Yes. The GLP-1 therapy is prescription-only as a tablet too and should only be used after a medical eligibility review and under medical supervision.

Weight-loss injection or tablet – what options are there?

Medication-supported weight loss is not limited to the so-called weight-loss injection. Depending on your medical starting point, different medicines and dosage forms may be considered. Which treatment is suitable is decided after a medical history, risk assessment and individual goal setting.

GLP-1 receptor agonists (injection)

GLP-1 agents mimic the body's own gut-hormone mechanism, which can reduce hunger and calorie intake. They are given as a weekly or daily injection.

GIP/GLP-1 dual agonists (injection)

Dual agents act on two metabolic receptors at the same time. They are also given as an injection and can be a further option where indicated.

Weight-loss tablets

Fat-binding agents reduce fat absorption from food. For certain metabolic profiles, a blood-sugar-regulating medicine may also play a role. Tablets have different indications and side-effect profiles than injections.

Non-medication support

Nutrition, activity, sleep, stress and muscle preservation are the core of any sustainable weight loss. These building blocks make sense regardless of whether medication is used or not.

Medical weight reduction – obesity is a chronic condition that requires evidence-based treatment. We offer you:

Medical diagnostics

Clarifying causes and analysing your metabolism – weight history, pre-existing conditions, medication and lab values.

Modern therapy

Use of current medical and medication-based treatment approaches – individually tailored to your daily life.

Medical supervision

Sustainable support instead of short-term diets – with regular follow-ups, in Vienna 1020 or by video appointment across Austria.

Honestly

Not wishful thinking – metabolic medicine.

Modern medication options can reduce hunger and calorie intake or lower fat absorption. What matters is a sound indication, slow titration, protein intake, resistance training and a plan for afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Who is medication-supported treatment suitable for?

Usually from a BMI of 30, or from 27 with comorbidities such as prediabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea. The decision is always individual and follows a medical work-up.

What side effects should I expect?

Nausea, fullness, constipation or diarrhoea are most common, mainly during dose escalation. Slow titration and dietary adjustments keep most symptoms well controlled.

Do I have to take the medication forever?

Not necessarily, but obesity is chronic: weight regain after stopping is common. That is why we plan the maintenance phase early, with or without a reduced dose.

Is it covered by insurance?

In Austria, medication for weight loss is usually not reimbursed. Parts of the consultation fee may be refunded depending on your insurer – we discuss this transparently in advance.

Is care available without medication?

Yes. Nutrition, movement, sleep and metabolic work-up are always part of the programme – even if you do not want or need medication.

Is the consultation fully online?

Yes. The initial consultation takes place as a video call. You only need a smartphone, tablet or computer with a camera and a stable internet connection.

Do I automatically get a prescription for a weight-loss injection?

No. A prescription is only issued after medical assessment, where there is a corresponding indication and no contraindications exist.

Which documents or lab results do I need?

Please have any existing reports, recent lab results and a list of your medications ready. If something is missing, we discuss in the consultation which tests make sense.

What happens after the initial consultation?

You receive a clear medical assessment and a plan with the next steps – for example lab tests, nutrition and activity recommendations, follow-up checks or, where indicated, a medication option.

Can I submit the invoice to my health insurer?

This is a private service. You receive an invoice that you can submit to your statutory or supplementary insurer. Whether and how much is reimbursed is decided by your insurer.

Is longer-term medical care possible?

Yes. If you wish, I will accompany you with regular follow-up appointments – online or at the practice in Vienna 1020.
