Telemedicine
Telemedicine in Austria: What can a GP do online?
A health concern needs medical attention. But not always a trip to the practice.
An unclear lab value, questions about a treatment or symptoms you would like to have assessed: many typical GP concerns can also be handled online.
This is about more than a conversation on a screen. Telemedicine can combine the assessment of symptoms and results, treatment planning and ongoing care. If further tests are needed, this is also assessed medically.
At DocJulian, your concern is at the centre: What does it mean for your health, what will help you and which next step makes sense?
Which concerns can be handled online?
GP care covers many tasks that do not require a physical examination at every contact. What matters are your symptoms, your medical history and the information needed for a reliable medical decision.
Assessing symptoms and planning treatment
Cold symptoms, hay fever, mild digestive complaints or questions about a skin change can, depending on the situation, first be assessed online.
This involves clarifying how long the symptoms have been present, how they are developing and which accompanying circumstances matter. This can lead to advice on relief, a suitable treatment or a targeted recommendation for an in-person examination.
Understanding lab values and test results
Have you received a lab report and want to know what it means for you? Or are questions about a specialist's letter still open after your appointment?
In a medical review of your results, findings are considered in context: together with your symptoms, previous values, existing conditions and medications.
This turns a test result into an understandable assessment. Together we can clarify whether a follow-up check is enough, further tests make sense or a treatment should be adjusted. This kind of interpretation is exactly what DocJulian's prevention and results consultation offers.
Reviewing medication and issuing prescriptions
Does your current medication still suit your health situation? Do you have questions about how to take it, how it works or how well you tolerate it? Do you need a repeat prescription?
Such concerns can be part of telemedical care. Possible side effects, interactions and necessary checks are also taken into account.
If a prescription is medically appropriate and the requirements are met, it can be issued as part of your care. Whether a treatment is started, continued or changed remains an individual medical decision.
Assessing sick leave and fitness for work
When you are ill, the question of whether you are fit for work can also be part of the online consultation. What matters is whether your state of health and the demands of your job can be assessed sufficiently.
A sick note is issued after medical assessment and in line with the applicable requirements. With care by a private (Wahlarzt) physician, direct electronic transmission to the ÖGK depends, among other things, on a corresponding agreement. Otherwise you may need to submit it yourself and have it recognised by the ÖGK.
Arranging referrals and further tests
Do you need a lab test, a specialist assessment or first a follow-up check?
The decision about further diagnostics can often be prepared online as well. Where medically necessary, suitable referrals can be part of your care.
The aim is not to order as many tests as possible. What matters is which test answers your specific question and how soon it should take place.
Monitoring blood pressure, blood sugar and known conditions
For known, stable conditions, readings taken at home and existing results can be an important basis for ongoing care.
Blood pressure trends, blood sugar values, symptoms and how well a treatment is tolerated can be assessed together. This can lead to recommendations to continue or adjust treatment.
Home measurements do not replace every examination. But they can help make changes between medical contacts easier to follow.
Prevention and vaccination advice
Which preventive measures suit your age, your history and your personal risks? Which tests make sense, and which are not necessarily needed?
Questions like these can also be discussed online. This includes, for example, interpreting existing blood pressure and cholesterol values and planning individual preventive measures.
Vaccinations show the division of tasks particularly clearly: the vaccination itself takes place in person. Which vaccination is recommended, when a booster makes sense and what is missing from your vaccination record can be clarified medically beforehand.
This way, advice and practical delivery can be combined sensibly.
Medical support for weight and metabolism
Medical weight management starts with a look at your overall health situation: weight history, accompanying conditions, medications, existing lab values and previous experiences.
On this basis, realistic goals and a suitable treatment are agreed. Later questions about progress, tolerability and further planning can also be supported digitally.
At DocJulian, the focus is not on a single measure, but on a treatment that fits your health and your everyday life.
Does telemedicine always have to be by video?
No. Telemedicine covers different forms of medical contact. These can include conversations, the review of existing results and written feedback. Which form makes sense depends on the medical question and the information available.
At DocJulian, care begins with an initial medical consultation. For ongoing care, phone or written feedback may also be options, depending on your concern and what has been agreed. A video call can be helpful or medically necessary, but it does not have to define every further contact.
Personal care means that your doctor knows your situation and agrees the next steps with you. Not that every follow-up question needs a new video appointment.
A GP who knows your history
A single test result rarely tells the whole story. Earlier symptoms, treatments already tried and changes in everyday life can also matter for ongoing care.
At DocJulian, initial and follow-up consultations stay with the same doctor. New questions can build on your previous care instead of starting from scratch each time.
The aim is a clear medical assessment: What matters now? What can you contribute yourself? Which treatment or test is needed? And when should progress be reviewed again?
When is an in-person examination needed?
Some medical steps cannot be done remotely. These include, for example, a blood draw, a vaccination, listening to the heart and lungs or certain physical examinations.
New, worsening or unclear symptoms may also require an in-person examination. Telemedicine does not replace it in that case, but helps determine the right next step in your care.
Good care can therefore combine both: medical assessment and ongoing support online, and a necessary examination in person where it is needed.
Important for acute or severe symptoms
A regular online consultation is not emergency care.
For acute shortness of breath, severe chest pain, sudden paralysis or speech problems, loss of consciousness, a severe allergic reaction or heavy bleeding, call 144. Do not wait for an appointment or digital feedback in such situations.
